Magnitude 5.1 earthquake hits Italian coast

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake on the Richter scale with an epicenter in the Ionian Sea shook the coast of Reggio Calabria (southern Italy) this Saturday, with no damage reported, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). The tremor was recorded at 5:53 local time (4:53 GMT), with the epicenter located more than 20 kilometers offshore from the Ionian coast at a depth of 65 kilometers. It was felt in the city of Reggio Calabria as well as in other areas of the Calabria region (south) and the neighboring island of Sicily (south). "Earthquake off Reggio Calabria: according to the first checks carried out by the Italy's Situation Room in contact with the territory, there are currently no reports of injuries or damage to property," indicated the Italian Department of Civil Protection in a message posted on the social network X. The shock caused moments of fear among the population, with several calls to emergency services and numerous messages on social networks, although the first inspections have not detected serious consequences, according to Civil Protection officials. As a precautionary measure, railway traffic between the towns of Roccella Jonica (south) and Melito di Porto Salvo (south) on the Catanzaro–Melito line has been suspended since 6:00 local time (5:00 GMT) to allow technical inspections of the infrastructure's condition, reported the Italian Rail Network. Authorities have activated monitoring and follow-up protocols in case of possible aftershocks.
